So 2017 was an incredible year for the Running Stormtrooper. I thought that would be the end of it, the end of the Make A Star Wars Wish project. I had achieved what I had set out to achieve, I had smashed my target and gone out on a high, plus importantly I stopped it before my friends and family began to tire of my Star Wars alter ego! However...

Star Wars is all about trilogies. I assure you all that 2018 will be the 3rd and final chapter of the Running Stormtrooper trilogy. Let’s make it an awesome one.

However after watching the BBC1 Children in Need appeal in November 2017 and watching an especially sad film as part of it, I knew I had to get out there and do some more charity running.  The film in question was about a little girl called Vanessa.

You can see the video here: https://youtu.be/5FYxuyHuESo. This introduced me to the very special charity Spread A Smile. https://spreadasmile.org

Problem 1 - How could I possibly beat what was achieved in 2017? It was an epic year: running a half marathon every day at the Star Wars Celebration convention, getting the Guinness World Record at the London Marathon and completing a gruelling 40 mile run?  What could top that? In 2018 there is no big Star Wars convention, i’ve already got the World Record (due to be taken from me by Darth Vader at the 2018 London Marathon)  and i’ve run an Ultra Marathon in the armour. There is only one thing I can do to make people stand up and pay attention, one final big push. I must run further, much much further. I’m going to go try to get the Stormtrooper running 100Km in one day!

Running a Marathon is hard enough, running the 40 miler was tough. So when I announced to my friends and family that I would attempt to run 100Km (62 miles) in the costume, people understandably thought I was bonkers. They might have a point.

Problem 2 - So i’d seen Vanessa’s story and really wanted to help the charity Spread A Smile, however I am the Make A Wish Running Stormtrooper. I love Make A Wish and what they do, therefore I felt torn between 2 equally deserving charities. After speaking with people from both organisations it quickly became apparent that I could run for both charities and do my best to promote them equally.

Make A Wish were able to provide me with a Charity place for the 2018 London Marathon which takes place on the 22nd of April.  I am aware that there is another Make A Wish runner who is attempting to take the Guinness World record on the same day. He runs as Darth Vader and should be able to beat my time fairly easily. At the time of writing this i am contemplating reapplying to try to beat my own record. I have no chance of beating Darth Vader but it could be a fun battle on the day which people might enjoy watching.

So there we have it, 2018 is set to be the hardest challenge ever. Have I bitten off more than I can chew?

The Make A Star Wars Wish project has had a slight name adjustment, it’s now ‘Make A Star Wars Wish and Spread A Smile’, I think it has a lovely ring to it.
